Saturday morning wasn’t what one would call picnic weather, but 14 riders (12 women and 2 toddler passengers) came out for our Critical Lass with Rainier Riders ride from Gas Works Park to Olympic Sculpture Park.
While we were preparing to head out, a large group of women on bicycles stopped into Gas Works Park for a pit stop on their way to a Woodinville winery–an annual ride they make from Magnolia. We were lucky to only lose one of our Critical Lasses to their ride. What a wonderful thing: not one, but two rides made up of women riders and both welcoming enough to take on drop-in riders…not that any of the winery-bound women opted to ditch their ride for ours.
Here’s the route we took from Burke-Gilman Trail to Ship Canal Trail to Elliott Bay Trail:
We showed the Rainier lasses the Fremont bike box, the Fremont Bridge bike counter, the Ship Canal Trail’s excessive and exciting zig zag over the train tracks, Fishermen’s Terminal, and the Magnolia train yard. See pictures of that and more in our Flickr set.
We stopped for bike portraits at the Olympic Sculpture Park, but given the cloudy weather and lack of picnic supplies, headed back north shortly thereafter. One of the riders had the brilliant idea to stop at Simply Desserts in Fremont for cake slices to go.
We look forward to the Rainier Riders showing us a bit of their stomping grounds, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 10th…more details to come!
